Long before it became the apple of Peter Gammons' eye, the Cape Cod Baseball League was churning out some of the best talent in all the world. Mickey Cochrane, the Hall of Fame catcher and manager who debuted with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1925, made the transition from the Boston University ranks to the pros via the Cape, as had fellow Cooperstown resident and lifetime Pirate third baseman Pie Traynor five years earlier.
