Gebler and Castine Pivotal in SteepleCats Win
Monday December 07th, 2009

North Adams, Mass. - Tyler Gebler pitched a shutout and Jonathan Castine drove in the three runs in the SteepleCats' 3-0 win over the Vermont Mountaineers Thursday night at Joe Wolfe Field. Gebler struck out nine and walked none in his second complete game and first shutout of the season while Castine went 2-for-4 at the plate and drove in all three SteepleCats runs.

James Giulietti went the first five innings for the Mountaineers, allowed two hits, struck out seven and forced the SteepleCats to leave five runners on base. CJ Ferriggi came into pitch the sixth inning and allowed three of the four batters he faced to reach before being relieved by lefty Corey Hawes. That's when Castine, a lefthanded hitter, dropped a single in down the left field line that scored Cam Kneeland and Matt Petty to make the score 2-0.

With the SteepleCats still leading 2-0, Jonathan Costa came in to pitch the bottom of the eighth inning for the Mountaineers. After Petty reached on an error, Costa retired the next two batters before facing Castine. Castine singled to right field and drove in Petty to make the score 3-0.

Gebler came back out for the ninth inning and struck out two batters in a 1-2-3 inning. Only four batters reached against Gebler all night and three of those batters were retired on the basepaths. Gebler therefore only had to face 28 batters, one over the minimum. He improves to 5-1 with the win and lowers his ERA to 1.96. With the loss, Ferriggi falls to 0-1.

The Mountaineers (14-20) will be in Holyoke, Mass. tomorrow night to take on the Blue Sox. The SteepleCats (22-13) will play a makeup game at home tomorrow night, weather permitting, against the Bristol Collegiate Baseball Club at 6:30 p.m.
