SteepleCats Break Up No-Hitter in the Eighth and Win 3-2
Monday December 07th, 2009
Sanford, Maine - After being held hitless for seven innings, the SteepleCats scored three runs on five hits in the eighth inning and came from behind to defeat the Sanford Mainers 3-2 at Goodall Park on Monday night. Mainers starter Shane Davis held the SteepleCats hitless for the first seven innings of the game before Tom Coulombe crushed a leadoff double in the eighth inning.
After allowing the double to Coulombe, Davis got pinch hitter Kevin Wager to ground out. Davis was then relieved by Eric Ruth with the Mainers leading 2-0. Ruth gave up a single to the first batter he faced, Garrett Gray, that allowed Coulombe to score and make the score 2-1. After Gray was replaced by pinch runner Chantz Mack, Devin Shines doubled to score Mack and tie the game 2-2. Shines was thrown out at third base as he tried to extend the double to a triple, but that did not stop the SteepleCats rally. Kyle Saul hit a double of his own and came around to score the go-ahead run on Mike LeBel's single.
Keeping the SteepleCats in the game while Davis held them hitless was Ryland Parker. The SteepleCats starter went 6 1/3 innings and allowed the two Mainers runs on three hits and two walks. The Mainers runs came from Joe Wendle's solo home run in the fourth inning and Michael Roth's solo home run in the seventh inning. Taylor McInnis relieved Parker and got the SteepleCats out of the seventh inning without allowing any further damage. He came back out for the eighth inning and pitched a 1-2-3 inning. Sean Albury pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for the SteepleCats to secure the win.
Davis, who allowed one run on one hit over 7 1/3 innings, received a no-decision. Ruth, who allowed a hit to each of the first four batters he faced in relief of Davis, took the loss. McInnis retired all five batters he faced and picked up the win for the SteepleCats. Albury pitched a scoreless ninth inning and earned his ninth save of the season.
The Mainers (16-13) don't take the field again until Thursday when they'll be in New Bedford to take on the Bay Sox. The SteepleCats (18-11) will travel to Keene Tuesday night to take on the Swamp Bats at 7:00 p.m.
