Hoilman Wins Inaugural College Home Run Derby
Omaha, Neb. - Former North Adams SteepleCat Paul Hoilman won the inaugural TD Ameritrade College Home Run Derby at Rosenblatt Stadium. The competition, which took place on Wednesday, aired nationally on CBS Sunday afternoon.
Hoilman hit 12 home runs in the final round of the derby to win convincingly. Jordan Ribera of Fresno State hit just one home run in the final round while Matt Skole of Georgia Tech did not hit any home runs in the final round. Hoilman, Ribera and Skole were the only players in the field of eight who hit more than two home runs before the 10-out limit.
Hoilman is playing for the Cotuit Kettleers of the Cape Cod Baseball League this summer after a terrific junior season at East Tennessee State University. Hoilman, the 2010 Atlantic Sun Player of the Year, set a school record with 25 home runs this past season. His home run total was fifth best nationally.
Hoilman played for the SteepleCats in 2008 and 2009. He was an NECBL All-Star both years and was named to the All-NECBL Second Team in 2009. In 2009 he tied the SteepleCats single-season home run record with eight. This past June, he was selected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 49th round of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft.
