Monday December 07th, 2009

Holyoke, Mass. - The SteepleCats got out to a 2-0 lead over the Holyoke Blue Sox Thursday night at MacKenzie Stadium, but the Blue Sox fought back to win the game 3-2.

The SteepleCats scored both of their runs in the top of the third inning. With two on and nobody out, Kyle Saul singled to left field to score Tom Coulombe from second base. After Mike LeBel was hit by pitch, Cam Kneeland came up with the bases loaded and nobody out. He bounced into a 4-6-3 double play, but Devin Shines was able to score from third base on the play to put the SteepleCats up 2-0.

The Blue Sox scored their first run in the bottom of the third inning. Frank Hager singled to lead off the inning, and advanced to second after Sam Bean reached on an infield hit. They both moved up 90 feet on Andrew Law's groundout and then Hager scored on Matt Mosher's groundout to make the score 2-1.

The Blue Sox tied the game in the sixth inning. Julian Sonnenfeld walked to lead off the inning and eventually scored on Christopher Migani's two-out triple to tie the game 2-2.

The Blue Sox took the lead in the seventh inning. With two outs, Randall Bulliard walked Mosher. The next batter, pinch hitter Angelo Bruno, doubled to right field and Mosher came around to score to put the Blue Sox up 3-2.

Blue Sox starter Taylor Wood went the distance and picked up the win. After hitting LeBel to load the bases in the third inning, he retired 20 of the last 21 batters he faced. He also struck out 12 batters, including the last four he faced. SteepleCats starter Stephen Rivera lasted five innings and allowed one run on five hits and two walks while striking out seven. He got a no decision and it was Bulliard who took the loss.
