During his high school days at Peachtree Ridge High School, Johnson played under head coach Ryan Hanik en route to earning three varsity letters and a Pitcher of the Year award in 2009 and 2011. His success did not go unnoticed, as Johnson was rated the 483rd best prospect nationally by Perfect Game USA and 39th in the state of Georgia.
