A reliable lefty reliever for the Villanova Wildcats, Matt Longfield will bring the mold of an experienced pitching option for Bryan Adamski’s staff this summer in North Adams.

Longfield has spent the better part of three seasons as one of Villanova’s most lethal lefty options out of the bullpen, and this year he has the Wildcats on the verge of a playoff berth in the BIG EAST Tournament. Even more impressive is the fact that over his three-year career so far, he has faced nearly 150 batters without allowing a home run. As a junior, he owns a 6.17 ERA and 0-1 record in 14 appearances while striking out 18 and walking 12 in 11 2/3 innings. More impressively, opposing hitters are batting just .190 against him.

No stranger to summer baseball, Longfield pitched in the Prospect League for the West Virginia Miners in 2011, appearing in 24 games and pitching 33 1/3 innings. He struck out 48 while allowing only 17 hits and went 2-1 with a 2.16 ERA. The lefty made an appearance in the Prospect League Championship Game, as well. The summer before, Longfield pitched in the ACBL for the Westhampton Aviators.

The Miami native has grown with each passing season and has seen his workload increase exponentially since arriving on campus. As a sophomore, he appeared in 18 games out of the bullpen and accumulated one save in 18 2/3 innings while garnering 24 strikeouts (11.6 strikeouts/nine innings). That followed a freshman campaign in which he saw action twice on the year.

The son of Robert and Julie Longfield, Matt was born Sept. 10, 1990. Has one brother, Chris (20), and is majoring in Mechanical Engineering.
