One of the most exciting players in the New England region during the 2012 season, outfielder Jeff Roy has buoyed the University of Rhode Island to one of its finest seasons in recent memory, providing a nearly unstoppable spark from the leadoff spot to propel the Rams to a first-place position in the Atlantic-10 heading into the final weeks of the regular season.

Roy’s prowess at the top of the lineup ranks among the nation’s best this season. He has compiled a consecutive-on-base streak of 35 straight games and continues to add to it in the month of May. His .367 batting average is tops on the team, and he has started all 45 games for the Rams this season. He has totaled a team-high 66 hits and scored 48 runs – also a team high – during that span while going 16-for-20 in stolen bases.

His success this season shouldn’t come as much of a surprise considering his tremendous freshman campaign. As a rookie, Roy finished with a .345 batting average in 145 at-bats, tallying 50 hits, 35 runs, 15 RBI, nine stolen bases, six doubles and five triples. Those numbers were good enough to earn him a nod on the Atlantic-10 All-Rookie Team.

Hailing from Cranston, not far from where he plays his college ball, Roy was a member of the baseball, hockey, football and track teams at Bishop Hendricken. He captained his baseball team as a senior and helped lead them to a state title as a junior and senior, earning him All-State honors twice.

The son of Sara and Paul, Jeff was born January 24, 1992. His father played football at URI from 1978-92. He has two older brothers, Ben and Greg, and is pursuing a major in Criminal Justice.
