A versatile, two-way player from the Long Island region, Brian Hunter will join the SteepleCats this summer as a late addition to the 2012 roster but his versatility will be an enormous boost both on the field, at the plate and on the mound.
The pitcher/infielder comes to the Berkshires from Hartford University, where as a sophomore was a staple in the lineup, seeing time in all but four games while making 52 starts. He ranked fourth on the squad with a .288 batting average on 49 hits and his 13 doubles were fourth most on the team. He drove in 21 runs – third most – and went 5-for-7 on the base paths. On the mound, Hunter finished 3-4 over 10 starts and 16 appearances while posting a 4.71 ERA, the second-best mark on the team. He struck out 55 and walked 46 in 65 innings of work – tied for most on the squad.
As a freshman, Hunter played in 48 games (47 starts) while also making five relief appearances on the mound. When he isn’t pitching, Hunter has seen time in the field primarily at third base or behind the plate. He finished his rookie season with 33 hits, ranking fourth on the team. Hunter was named to the America East Academic Honor Roll for achieving a grade point average of 3.0 or greater.
A four-year letter winner at St. John the Baptist, Hunter played nearly every position in high school and was named a top-25 All-Long Island Player and was honored as an Under Armour Outstanding Player in 2009. Last summer, Hunter batted .389 with 19 RBIs and 22 runs scored in a wooden bat collegiate league and also posted a 3.27 ERA with 41 strike outs in 30.2 innings pitched, adding three saves and a 2-2 record.
