NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – Junior righty Tyler Gebler made his first start in a black and gold uniform in over two years a memorable one, as the Rutgers University starting pitcher went the distance while needing just over 90 pitches to propel North Adams to a 3-1 victory over Vermont on Friday evening’s home opener at Joe Wolfe Field.
Gebler, who played for the SteepleCats (2-0) back during the 2010 season that saw the franchise earn its first Western Division regular-season title, was magnificent in his first start of the season, as the Mountaineers (0-2) scratched just three hits across and plated their only run on a solo homer in the second.
North Adams, meanwhile, was proficient on the offensive end for the second night in a row, reaching double-digit hits (10) for the second straight night and squandered numerous more scoring opportunities by stranding eight runners on base.
After falling behind by a run on the aforementioned long ball off the bat of Vermont first baseman Logan Pierce, North Adams rallied to take the lead with two runs in the bottom of the second.
With two outs and nobody on, Barry University’s Adrian English singled to get the home side going. After a walk, UT-Pan American product Shane Klemcke singled through the right side to tie the game, and in the next at-bat, URI sophomore Jeff Roy laid down a beautiful suicide squeeze to plate the go-ahead run, giving the SteepleCats a 2-1 lead after two.
An inning later, Gebler’s collegiate teammate in Rutgers first baseman Charlie Law launched a solo home run to straightaway center, providing an insurance run that never was entirely necessary due to Gebler’s brilliance.
The Island Heights, N.J., native scattered two more hits over the remaining six innings and never allowed a base runner to get farther than first base. Gebler finished with three strikeouts while allowing as many hits and one walk while being the beneficiary of tremendous defense behind him.
The SteepleCats will look to continue their hot start with a road trip to Western Division rival Danbury starting tomorrow evening at 6:30 p.m.
